Hi. I’m Sarah aka Scary Gorgon. I make comics, artist books, the occasional meme, and objects that tend to sit at the edges of their own forms. My practice moves between sequential narrative, fine art, ephemera and ephemeral experiences, and research – often asking what happens when a familiar format is pushed until it becomes something else.
Transformation runs through most of what I make: in the stories I tell, in the materials I use, and in the relationship between the work and the people who encounter it. The form is rarely incidental; medium, visual register, degree of finish, are all carriers of meaning rather than decoration. The material and aesthetic are frequently part of the piece, not just a container for it.
Underlying the work is an ongoing investigation into how word, image, and material make meaning together, and what lives in the space between those elements. This has led me recently toward the archives and investigating the medieval manuscript page – the gloss, the marginalia, the decorated initial – as a site where that relationship was understood differently, valued differently, and where I think comics in particular have something to learn and something to offer in return.
Due to existing work commitments: I am not available for creative work for hire at present. But if you would like to get in contact about anything else: please drop me a message via the contact form.
